Philosophy Statement

It is our expectation that the philosophy and objectives of Schenck High School will be an integral aspect of the daily operation of the school. We expect that the curriculum will reflect the changing needs of the local, state, national and global communities. We expect to challenge all students to maximize their intellectual abilities, realize the lifelong utility of education, learn to accept responsibility for personal decisions and actions, and to develop the skill and willingness to work cooperatively with others. We encourage all students to be active participants in the 'joy' of attaining knowledge and skills. 

It is the policy of the school board, in its actions, and those of its employees that there shall be no discrimination on the basis of sex, race, religion, nationality, ethnic origin, age, or handicap for employment in, participation in, or operation and administration of any program or activity in the East Millinocket School Department.

Population:

Approximately 4,011, comprising communities of East Millinocket, Medway, and Woodville.

Location:

Approximately 65 miles North of Bangor, Maine's third largest city.

School Type:

Four-year public comprehensive high school.

Enrollment:

228 students from the communities of E. Millinocket, Medway, and Woodville.

Class Enrollment:

65 Seniors, 49 Juniors, 51 Sophomores, 63 Freshmen, and 2 post-graduate and/or non-diploma students.

Maine Principal's Association Classification

Class D or Small School Division for all academics and for Cross Country;  Eastern Maine Class C for the rest of the athletic programs.

Accreditation:

New England Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools; Maine State Department of Education and Cultural Services.

School Year:

Two semesters with two marking periods per semester.

Class Rank:

Non-weighted and determined on a 0-100 numerical grade scale.

Scheduling/Class Periods:

 Four periods per day in 82 minute blocks. Courses meet every other day for a total of eight block periods. All Students are required to take a minimum of six courses per year. Region III Vocational in Lincoln offers 3 hours of a technical instruction per day for students enrolled in a tech prep program of study.

Course Selection:

Students have a choice of programs of study to choose from: College / Preparatory is for students who plan to apply to a selective four-year academic institution upon graduation, and who have demonstrated superior academic work throughout their scholastic experience. Technical Preparation is designed for students planning to apply for admission to either a two or four year college or technical school. General Studies is for students who desire to enter the labor force or seek admission to a certificate or diploma program upon graduation. Over sixty percent of the student body is enrolled in the college preparatory program.

Advanced Placement:

Schenck High School is involved in an articulation agreement with Eastern Maine Technical College to offer college level classes to qualified Juniors and Seniors.

Honor Roll 

Honors are announced at the end of each marking period. Students who achieve a grade of 93 or above in all courses qualify for High Honors. Students who achieve a grade of 85 or higher in all courses qualify for Honors.

Science - 3 credits as follows: I credit Earth Science, I credit Biology, I credit Elective

Physical Education - 1 credit 2 years

Health - 1/2 credit

Arts - I credit

Computer Applications - 1 credit

84% entered 4-year colleges, junior colleges, vocational colleges, or other higher educational programs: 2% entered military services: 14% entered the work force.

Media Center

The Schenck High School Library houses over 10,000 volumes and subscribes  to over sixty periodicals. The library has nine computers which are networked for internet access. The librarian can obtain most needed materials and resources from State, College, and public libraries. The Media Center is staffed by one librarian with a Master of Library Science degree and one part- time educational technician.

The Guidance department of Schenck High School exists to provide various services for students as they attempt to orient themselves to our shifting society and meet the demands made in and beyond high school.  The department is equipped to help students with problems they might have, whether an educational, vocational, or a personal matter. A guidance library and computer terminal with internet access is available in the guidance center for all students.
